New site front end

Post by WinterMute » Tue Jun 01, 2010 10:49 am

Sorry about the recent downtime, unfortunately there was a major server hardware failure but now we're back up and I took the opportunity to redo the site front end. Rather than putting the wordpress back again I decided to go with a portal for the forums which should hopefully get people asking support questions here rather than in the wordpress comments the way they were before.

There's still a bit of work to do with the announcements forum, obviously all the links that went to the wordpress frontend need to be replaced. Bear with us and please don't comment on the broken links, we know, they'll be fixed quite soon.

Hopefully you like the new look but do feel free to make suggestions here.

It's a nice new fresh look for the site.

Once the missing document's are sorted out I think this site will be THE place for help and advice, as well as the IRC chat room.

I wasn't really planning on allowing user selectable themes, sorry - this one has been customised for the portal front end as well as a few other tweaks here and there. I don't really fancy spending a lot of time doing the same work to a whole bunch of themes when most people will stick with the default.

Having said that I think the background image was a bit much so it's been removed, should help with readability.

I like it a lot better than the WordPress. It makes the site look to the stumbling visitor like a development site, rather than some 14-year-old's blog with crummy ads filling the page. Not to offend anyone, but those are the impressions I got from the site, before and after.

I like it. it's a whole fresh new look. and its good to have the site back.

but if the wordpress is gone now, where will the static posts go? like the posts about setting up IDE's with devkitPro, the download link for the devkitPro installer, some program about gba xboo communication and others like FAQ etc. will they go to the wiki, the forum or some other place?

also don't forget to put a link to the libnds (and other) documentation, the devkitPro wiki and the sourceforge page on the homepage.

and while you add it, you might want to fix the smilies :P having only some of the smilies working isn't good :)

and happy birthday, WinterMute

I think it looks ok, but like vuurrobin said, it's missing most of the important stuff. (maybe you're working on this, so I'm making a big deal out of the wrong thing?) A forum (which now seems to be all it is) is great and all, but a product's site should have an overview of what you're getting, (nothing annoys me more than going to a product's website and nowhere does it tell what the thing is!), obvious download links, etc. In other words, NOT just look like (or be) a forum.
