Javascript on the DS. Possible?
Javascript on the DS. Possible?
Hello there everyone. I was wondering, would it be possible to port an existing javascript interprenter(for instance the V8 engine (see:http://code.google.com/apis/v8/intro.html) of Google, or the Tiny.js library(see: http://code.google.com/p/tiny-js/) ) in C++ to the DS without having to redo most of the work? My big dream still is to be able to program in a interprented programming language ón the DS.
Re: Javascript on the DS. Possible?
Well, I'm with you in spirit... however, you can actually get Opera for the DS/DSi . The JS implementation that comes with it is fairly good. It even includes support for <canvas> and related tools.
You're welcome to try new ideas, if you like. But, in my opinion, Javascript is already in the DS, so why reinvent the wheel?

Re: Javascript on the DS. Possible?
Im porting an easy-to-use language for DS called Monkey
here is a screenie of my progress
Monkey compiles to other languages , (C++ for the NDS)
It will be much faster than javascript but slower than handwritten C++ because it uses a garbage collector
At the moment I am using the nitro engine for the 2D graphics (monkey has built-in input sound and graphics)
Unfortunately Monkey costs 120 dollars but this is cheap considering it compiles for all these platforms
flash,desktop,canvas,android,iphone,Xbox 360
I am not making any money from monkey whatsoever, I am just a DS nerd who wants to make games.
Overall this will be good for devkitpro and libnds because more users=more donations

... just wait a minute.
Monkey costs $120... yet, you're porting Monkey to the DS? How come?
What sources are you using? Have you obtained permission to do this with the source code of this project?
... or is Monkey actually yours?

Well... the problem with Opera for the DS is that you will always need the RAM expansion kit.(on the DSi this is different of course). the DS Browser is mainly built to show HTML pages from all over the internet. In other words: a self-built javascript-interprenter would probably be faster because the whole HTML-part and the WiFi part aren't necessary.Izhido wrote:Well, I'm with you in spirit... however, you can actually get Opera for the DS/DSi . In fact, any other interprenter language aside from Javascript would be nice as well. I know about MicroLua, but that project is kindof completely bugged right now, and lua isn't the best language to develop games in, in my opinion.
I don't understand it as well ...Izhido wrote:... just wait a minute.

When you buy it, you get full source and you have to work out how to port it yourself. You dont need permission.Izhido wrote:... just wait a minute.

And there's no free download for it?
Re: Javascript on the DS. Possible?
I got the impression that the $120 is a developer license and users would purchase apps created for the monkey platform through some type of "app" store. not sure though...
