Yes, it is in the CVS. The background api is pretty close to final but the sprite api has a few questions outstanding. Obviously use at your own risk as we may make some breaking changes before the next release.

Just adding my thoughts on the more/less abstraction question. Personally I think abstraction is OK as long as we can still do it by hand if we want, and also as long as the abstraction doesn't come at a big cost to speed. After all, if we want major abstraction we can just go for Palib..
