Write data to Wiimote

I would like to switch the LED's on the Wiimote. I looked at the WMLFLASH sample and wonder if there is a better way to do this.

Can I use the WPAD functions to query the buttons on the Wiimote and then use IPC functions in parallel to send data to the Wiimote to switch the LED's? Or can I call Wiiuse functions directly from my application to do this?
