Wii sprite example code data format

I have compiled and run the gxSprites example code for the Wii without issue. I am now trying to change the ball sprites to another shape but all I get is corrupted data where the new sprite should be. I suspect I am not storing the sprite data in the proper format to be used. What is the tool to create sprite data files for the Wii and/or what is the data format I should use to store data as per the gxSprite example code?
