best sound quality

Hi there,
I'm neither a sound engineer nor an expert. I'm just a normal player and all I want to hear is the best sound quality I can achive on my DS. I'm using maxmod to play simple sound effects (cuz they are .wav files) but the quality is horrible.. ;/ I'd be glad if you could tell me how to improve it.
Let's say I start with a normal .mp3 song everyone has. What program would be the best to convert the song to .wav and what settings/properties (like frequency etc.) should I use to play this song in maxmod on my DS and not to get this horrible cracking?

I use nero wave editor to convert Mp3 to wav... Well I think it's better to use MOD as BGM and WAV as SFX
