I've managed to compile the sprite demo and load it onto the wii using wiiload but after a couple second of frantic ball bouncing it just hangs, there doesn't seem to be a reason in the code looks like it should keep going until I press the home button.
Is this a known issue?
The wii is an early model (first UK batch) and has homebrew menu running on 3.3 with the twilight patch (applied after 3.3).

same here, but with version 3.3U
mine is a brand new US wii hooked to a PAL-M tube TV.
running it on the gcube emulator (simply removing calls to WPAD* and compiling w/out the 2 wii libs) runs just fine.
